What is Modern Atheist? |
|
| |
-
Modern Atheist attempts to be an online community for like-minded
individuals to come together to discuss issues revolving around
the concepts of god, gods, religion, science, anything relating
to belief and how these things affect society.

What limits are there as to what can be discussed? |
|

Censorship is a dangerous thing. Although many (in America
at least) seem to believe that we live mostly without censorship,
I feel this is not the case. Non-believers have been actively
censored in the media and other venues throughout history. I
want to foster a community that allows FREE and OPEN discussion
and to that end there is only one thing that is "off-limits":
Hate Speech. (This rule has been rescinded. To find
out why, click
here) Discussions ABOUT hate speech are perfectly
welcome and an important part of what will probably define this
community, but Hate Speech in and of itself, will be removed
immediately. Language will not be censored, nor will content.
There are many unpopular ideas and opinions out there that are,
in my opinion, without validity (for instance, religion) but
no matter what my personal opinion on an issue, moderators will
do their best not to allow it to sway the moderation of the
discussion.

So if you're an Atheist, what's with the religious symbols in
the logo? |
|
| |
-
A number of others have pointed out the very same issues with
the logo. all in all, whereas I do understand the concerns presented,
I did choose the logo elements for some very specific reasons.
I think that the idea of the site being for a "modern"
atheist must remain consistent with the idea that any atheist
today must live in a world that has religion as a daily reality.
In almost the same way that homosexuals or african americans
attempt to "take back" various slurs and slang, I
was attempting to co-opt some religious symbolism for my own
ends. Ideally "atheism" would not need to be defined
as a lack of theism, but in our world today, this is the unfortunate
reality. The upside down t's (or crosses) mingled with a star
of david and the pentagram are aiming to take these "loaded"
symbols and put them together in a new way, one that is not
yet defined in the modern consciousness. Quite frankly I wish
I could've come up with even more symbols to put together, but
I found that more became overkill.
Plus I think it looks cool ;-).
