Atheism: The Case Against God

by: suitesuccubus

Atheism: the Case Against God by George H. Smith is a definite must read for anyone who is an atheist, is a theist, or whoever can't decide. For an atheist, it brings depth to your argument, for a theist it could help in understanding another perspective, and for someone unsure or still searching, it could provide clarity about what it is to be an atheist.

This isnĚt your everyday dry philosophy read, though every bit of philosophy tends to have its dry moments, this book is full of insight, clever anecdotes, and hypothetical situations. Smith's arguments are well thought out and pursued, quoting and using examples from other philosophers such as Ayn Rand and Thomas Aquinas. He also touches on a bit of ethics, but of course in a religious sense.

Throughout the book, Smith analyzes different arguments in the case for god, picks them apart and eventually flushes them down the toilet. In the beginning, Smith defines agnosticism as "the impossibility of knowledge with the regard to a god or supernatural being". Arguments made in the case for god are related in some way to agnosticism, according to Smith, and in this way he uses logic to disprove them, rather than the scientific approach that most utilize when arguing this point of view.

No matter your religious background, this book will definitely offer insight into any perspective of this age old argument. Give it a shot, its not likely to disappoint.

On Campus

We've opened up a new discussion forum dedicated to discussion of religion in school aptly titled On Campus. You may also notice that the secular activism forum has been absorbed into the atheism and politics forum. Just a small reorganization to help serve our community.

This Week in atheism 09/13/2004

Another week, another round of crazy religious news from around the world wide web. To start off, there is a new PBS special airing soon exploring the "Question of God". As I understand it, the primary thrust of the show will be an analysis of two historical characters on opposite sides of the question. While one side explores the life and times of Sigmund Freud who was a noted secularist, other side discusses C. S. Lewis who became a Christian at 31 (although was an atheist previously). It promises to be an interesting discussion and I suggest everyone check their local listings. The show airs on september 15th and 22nd (in 2 parts).

Have you ever been curious about what religion does around the world? Well thanks to google, I found a very interesting article on the Times of India site discussing a census of religion. Not to be out done in the dialog department there are no less than 7 pages of responses which examine the issues. Why count the different religions? How does this fit into the Indian caste system? Why can't there be a blank on the form for atheists (which would be rather fitting in my opinion). I found it quite compelling to see non-americans discussing these issues I hope you will as well.

And a few quick short takes this week:
Save that CROSS!!
Here we have an arab speaking out against radical islam
and I would love to read what this guy is railing against, but either way I'll probably still think he's an idiot.

This Week in atheism 09/06/2004

Happy labor day fellow atheists. I hope, like me, you all got the day off today but I realize that for many, labor day is simply another day of labor, just like any other. If you do happen to have some time time on your hands, chew on this and let everyone know what you think.

First up, we'll lead with politics. There is just so much politics flying around these days, it's hard to keep up. Whether it's an in depth discussion of evangelicals and their political leanings (not what you might expect, by the way), or a fascinating discussion from NPR on the role of religion in politics, you can hardly hurl a brick these days without bashing up against a politically charged issue. What side is who on? Is the GOP the party of christ? Are the democrats nothing more than a bunch of god-hating atheists? Thankfully, we have the Daily Citizen to remind us that "It is grievous to see the number of Christians who still vote alongside abortionists and homosexuals." As a young(er) voter, it is quite interesting to watch this process and to see what other young voters are thinking about during the campaign season.

So what else is going on this week? Just a couple little things to mention. Do you know anything about the GPL? That would be the General Public License which accompanies most open source software out there. Think it has anything to do with atheism? Well maybe not directly, but check out this article comparing the fight against "under god" to attacks leveled on the GPL.

And finally, from the Wichita Eagle, we've got a supposed group of atheists who are finding their political voice.
