This Week in atheism 08/30/2004
Jesus christ, has it really been almost a month? Well, it looks like it has so we will hit on a whole bunch of stuff for this week's roundup of wacky religious news from around this marble of ours.
To begin, (as if no one saw this coming) Michael Newdow will refile his challenge to "under god" after the supreme court's ruling. You might remember that the court didn't really rule against him, they simply don't believe he can represent his daughter because of custody issues.
Also this past week, an editorial ran in the New York Times concerning the punishment (or lack thereof) of general Boykin. This was the guy who ran around proclaiming what most of the right was afraid to come out and say, that we were goin' on an honest ta god crusade again' the heathens!! In the editorial, he says that Boykin should be removed as a national embarrassment. See also these two letters in response to the editorial who both seem to agree that he should be out, but for markedly different reasons.
Next we come to this story/editorial concerning the growing trend towards "christian based" business partnerships and directories. Seems simple enough, let christians know where the christian businesses are so that they can all do business together. I would be opposed to the idea if it didn't then provide me with a convenient list of businesses to avoid.
And a new pew research poll was released recently discussing faith in american politics. Frankly, the results tell me that the atheist still doesn't have enough of a voice around here. Do not forget to VOTE this november fellow atheists. This could be the most important election of our lifetimes.
And I'll close with some quick short takes:
An atheist trying to ruin it for the rest of us by admitting that he considers his non-belief to be a faith
A wandering self affirmation which makes atheism out to be the boogey man in the closet and
A striking co-option of the cinema to further the christian disease.
