“ Follow the path of the unsafe, independent thinker. Expose your ideas to the dangers of controversy. Speak your mind and fear less the label of 'crackpot' than the stigma of conformity. And on issues that seem important to you, stand up and be counted at any cost.”
--Thomas J. Watson

Killing in the Name of...

So am I the only one that is completely aghast at the holy war that is currently waging on this tiny marble of ours? Are there still people out there who mistakenly believe that the United States is a secular nation? Because it would seem to me to be pretty obvious that our semi-elected leaders are fighting the same old fight that has been waging for millennia now: The Christians VS The Muslims.

The Baptists, Abercrombie, and A Letter.

As if there were any confusion the Southern Baptists are once again re-affirming that they will not be silenced. It seems that, according to our ultra-religious head-dunkers, the problems in the United States stem from not enough people yammering on about religion. Funny, and here I thought it was just the opposite. Of course, I'm just an atheist with a chip on his shoulder.

And it seems that everyone's favorite trendy clothing store Abercrombie and Fitch (NYTimes Online, free registration required) is being accused of discrimination. Apparently their hiring practices and model selection project a suspiciously monochrome image into the eyes of America. Although not directly a religion problem, discrimination in any form can be disturbing. Lets all show show the world that we're not gonna take it by switching to The Gap, or Old Navy. You know, trendy clothing stores that are, um, well... Nevermind.

And finally, a response letter from a slightly smaller publication from someone who seems to be getting it right. A big thanks to Craig Schroeder for putting into words and managing to get published, his take on our government's stance on religion. We need more people like Craig, to keep fighting the good fight. However, we also need our government to show more respect for the constitutionally protected freedom of religion than it has of late, but I guess we gotta crawl before we can walk right?

Faith Based Initiatives and their Inevitable Results

Ah the danger of Faith-Based legislation. This article from CNN.com discusses a promising education bill that has an unfortunate piggy back section that allows hiring based on religion. So far, it's only implemented in 8 states, but if you don't want it to spread further, contact your congressman.

And as a continuing example of what happens when religion drives policy, another round of talks has been unsuccessful in the middle east as both Hamas (LATimes, free registration required) and Israel refuse to stop the violence. Isreal has pledged to continue attacks while Hamas has rejected another cease-fire as one sided. Nothing like a good old holy war!

News of The Day:

From Cnn.com: This article discusses a recent meeting between the ACLU and FBI head Robert Mueller. An interesting article as lawmakers and civil libertarians like the ACLU have often been at odds as to where liberty extends and haw to best serve freedom.

From Cnn.com: This article, published today, confirms the discovery of the remains of atheist leader Madalyn Murray O'Hair. O'Hair gained noteriety when a lawsuit she filed led to the 1963 Supreme Court ban on organized prayer in schools.

From Yahoo: This article goes into a good amount of depth concerning the Alabama case which has a huge tablet of the 10 commandments decorating the Judicial hall of the city. The implications of this case are very important because the outcome could strike at the heart of not only one's freedom OF religion, but freedom FROM religion.
